Most Luos love fish as their staple and historical diet, a nature that dates back to many years back and their history as one of the nation’s tribes that has been involved in fishing since time immemorial.
However, there still exits some groups of Luos that do not take fish, do not enjoy the meal or cannot just feast on the water creatures.
Here are some of them;
1. Allergic persons
Just like there are people who do not take meat of eggs for health purposes or in fear of bad body reactions, there exists a group of people who cannot take fish for similar purposes.
Some of these originate from the lake region, some even living meters to the lake, but cannot take the risk for fear of retaliation from their bodies.
2. Fish vendors
Most fish vendors nationally, most of whom are Luos, hardly take fish as a result of their constant contact with the product, therefore taking away their appetite.
This is also propagated by them knowing, witnessing and at times undertaking the actual procedure of processing the product before it is presented for sale, including the removal of the intestines which can be disgusting.
Therefore, they lose interest in it as a meal but retain the interest as business.
3. Town folk and children
A good number of children do not take fish, mostly Dagaa, on the excuse that the fish is looking at them (fish do not have eyelids). Being children, they therefore develop pity for them and avoid eating them.
Some town folks from Luo Nyanza have also become so obsessed of junks and other foods, forgetting the nutritious fish.
