He is a man who courts controversy like a skilled cobra charmer. He is bold and courageous in equal measure.
The man is Dennis Itumbi, Senior Digital Director and Diaspora Communication in the Office of the President.
The former blogger has hit headlines in the recent past for what many would term as the wrong reasons. He appeared in court to support TV girl Jaquee Maribe when she appeared in court to answer to murder charges alongside Joe Irungi, alias Jowie.
Itumbi was also arrested for allegedly authoring a fake letter alleging plots to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.
Prior to these two isolated incidences, Itumbi had been a blogger who vehemently and vigorously drummed support for the then Jubilee coalition during the 2013 general elections. For his efforts, he was rewarded with a post in the statehouse as a head of digital communications.
He would embark the job with the gusto of a wounded buffalo, defending the Jubilee coalition government against attacks thrown at it by the opposition. He was indefatigable, showing up for media interviews with a load of files.
Recently, going by his posts, Itumbi seems to be singing the tune of DP Ruto. He has been defending him left, right and centre.
It is without a doubt that Itumbi will be a major asset in DP Ruto’s campaign, owing to his expertise in digital communication, backed by his fearless spirit.
The campaigns to succeed President Kenyatta will be loud and brash, especially on the online platform. With Itumbi on his side, DP Ruto will be assured of a solid fortress, fending off scathing online attacks the virtual world is known for.
Most of all, Itumbi’s loyalty is one remarkable trait. Once he sets his mind on something, it will be difficult to change. That is one man DP Ruto would surely benefit from when the ‘war bell’ signals.
