Soy Member of Parliament Caleb Kositany has cast doubts over a pronunciation by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati that a referendum would cost Sh12 billion.
Kositany who has declared his support for the referendum push says the quoted amount is way too high.
Speaking in Barsombe ward in his constituency on Tuesday, the Jubilee legislator said there is a need for an innovative way to be embraced in holding the referendum so that it does not cost too much of the taxpayers' money.
Kositany, an ally of Deputy President William Ruto said the much a referendum should cost is Sh2 billion.
“I recently heard Chebukati say a referendum would cost Sh12 billion. I don’t believe that figure, we want to make this referendum the cheapest electoral process that has ever been conducted in the country and Sh2 billion should be the highest amount,” said the first time legislator.
He challenged system developers across the country to come up with proposals on the best ways to conduct the referendum at the cheapest cost possible.
“Those with the ideas on the best system we can use should bring on the table so that we interrogate them and if it is foolproof then we go for it,” noted Kositany.
