Kisumu County Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Tuesday addressed the Kisumu County Assembly after members came back following a long recess.
He gave a highlight of the challenges being faced by his administration in delivering its mandate to the people of Kisumu County, among them the ongoing nurses strike.
“At this point in time, we are faced with the challenge of the nurses’ strike. It is important for this Assembly and the people of Kisumu County to understand that the nurses’ strike was called by the national union of nurses and that negotiations to resolve the issues are taking place at the national level, with involvement of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and the Council of Governors (CoG) on behalf of County governments,” he said.
The county boss said that at the county level, discussions can only be conducted with local union representatives and that modalities of implementing agreements reached the national level.
“We cannot purport to reach bargains and agreements with any force of law over the industrial action. However, to alleviate the suffering of our people, the County Government has moved to enlist services of temporary nurses until the impasse is resolved. This action needs to be understood for its good intention to save lives rather than any form of intimidation or contempt for the striking nurses,” he added.
The governor also addressed members of the assembly on his plans for 2019 and beyond, key among them being the relocation of the Kachok dumpsite which is a project that was initiated last year.
He assured the members that the project will be done within the next three months
