Garissa county First Lady Fardosa Osman is set to lead a one-week Fistula medical camp at the Garissa referral hospital as from Sunday to Friday next week.
In a tweet, the First Lady invited local residents to attend the event that is an initiative of the county government and Amref Kenya.
Some of the services that will be offered include the screening of gynaecological problems and reconstructive surgery for those suffering from obstetric fistula.
"...First Lady Garissa County in partnership with @Amref_Kenya invites you for a Fistula Camp. Activities: Screening of gynaecological problems, reconstructive surgery for obstetric fistula. Venue: Garissa Referral HospitalDates: 19th-24th May 2019," reads the invitation.
Obstetric fistula is a medical condition where a hole forms around the rectum or bladder due to prolonged obstructed labour. This leaves the victim in a state where urine or faeces or even both freely find a way out.
As a result, fistula patients suffer isolation and social segregation as they find themselves unfit to freely interact with other people who are oblivious of their predicament.
The First Lady's medical camp is expected to give patients a new lease of life by the remedial surgeries and counselling.
