A rival group of Luo elders has emerged to poke holes into recent suggestions to have Monica Okoth, wife to late Kibra MP Ken Okoth, inherited by a member of the family.
In his initial suggestion, leader of the splinter group of the Luo Council of Elders Nyandiko Ongadi wanted Monica inherited as per the Luo traditions.
However, the council chair Ker Willis Otondi on Sunday rubbished the suggestion, bashing Ongadi over his "archaic" push, terming his suggestions an embarrassment to the Luo community.
He likened Ongadi's suggestion to the custom where Luos had six of their lower teeth removed, but which is no longer practised by members of the community.
“Initially the Luo used to remove six lower teeth, which is now a thing of the past. The same should apply to certain ancient beliefs like those fronted by Ongadi,” said Otondi.
Okoth who succumbed to colon cancer on Friday last week was cremated on Saturday in a private function.
The late MP's mother Angelina Ajwang' and her family were opposed to the exercise and wanted to instead bury him.
The family on Monday halted plans to bury a banana stem to symbolize the burying of the body of Okoth which was cremated at the Kariokor crematorium.
