Obado's arrest came after he had just attended an event at Nairobi's Hilton Hotel, a meeting bringing together a group of international development partners and also attended by Deputy President William Ruto.

When he was made aware of his pending arrest by civilian dressed officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Obado decided to get away.

According to the police, the embattled Governor called a taxi and directed it to drive to the basement, deciding to avoid his official vehicle.

The Governor left before the event ended and headed to the VIP washrooms on his way to the basement, accompanied by his security detail.

It took the sharp eyes of an armed officer to notice that Obado's seat in the event was empty and alerted his colleagues who later followed up on the county chief's whereabouts and caught up with him.

The officer followed him to the taxi and stopped it before ordering the Governor out. He was then arrested, taken up a ramp to the ground floor and into a waiting police car.

The county boss was taken to the Special Crimes Prevention Units (SCPU) and later DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.

The situation attracted the attention of media persons attending other functions in the hotel, reports the Standard.

During his arrest, he was told that he was being arrested because one of the guns found in his house in Migori during a raid on Tuesday was unregistered, hence illegal.

In the raid, five guns were recovered in his Nairobi home and three others in his rural home in Rapogi, Migori County, alongside over 100 bullets.

The Governor was out on a Ksh 5 million bond following his other ongoing case over alleged involvement in the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
