An inmate who attempted to escape was shot dead while being transferred to Prison from Kangundo police station.
The incident was confirmed by Kangundo police commander Benjamin Ong'ombe who said that the incident transpired on Friday afternoon along Kangundo - Machakos road a few meters from Mukukuni market.
He said that 39 inmates were being ferried to Machakos G. K prison when the said inmate wrestled an officer trying to snatch his firearm.
"There was an inmate who attempted to escape, just a few meters from Mukukuni market he tried to snatch a rifle from one of the officers," said Ong'ombe on phone.
He said that due to the struggle the officer was forced to open fire on the inmate killing him instantly where he was confirmed dead on arrival at Machakos level five hospital.
He said that the inmate had been charged with robbery with violence.
The officer was also injured on the arm where he has treated at Machakos level five hospital and allowed to home.
This incident comes just two years after other six inmates attempted to flee from custody.
The six were being transferred from Machakos GK Prison to Kangundo law courts.
One of them was shot dead while escaping while the remaining five were later re-arrested.
