The former minister is facing stiff competition from Federal Party candidate Eddy Oketch, who has backing from embattled area Governor Okoth Obado.

Addressing locals on Junet Mohammed's phone in a rally at Suna East, Raila insisted that voters should ignore party critics.

“I am appealing to you to vote for Ochillo Ayacko as the senator because he is the best candidate. Come out in large numbers on October 8 and stand with ODM," said Mr Odinga.

“Believe in the handshake as it is going to take this country to the next level. I will be coming on Thursday and Friday to tell you more,” added Mr Odinga.

The by-election was occasioned by the death of Ben Oluoch, who passed away following a long battle with cancer.

And for the past week, ODM team has fought claims that the party imposed Ayacko, who lost to Obado in gubernatorial contest last year.

Deputy Party Leader Hasan Joho insisted that Mr. Oketch is being sponsored by Deputy President William Ruto.

"Ignore those sponsored by Ruto. This is a contest which we must win by landslide.

In was not the first time Odinga was campaigning for a candidate on phone given that last year in November, through Moses Wetangula's phone, he rooted for Richard Onyonka.

He will however visit the region on Thursday and Friday during the last moments of campaigns.
