YouTube is the 'cool' at Moi University, especially among media students. Most students are currently investing in shooting short videos to be uploaded on YouTube.
Some of the fastest rising YouTube channels that are being managed by Moi University students include; Yegon Emmanuel, Brian Sikulu TV, Zero Chills Tv, Mashambani TV, TVG TV, Quzza TV, Fleek Media TV just to mention a few.
A good number of these channels have defined content. Mashambani TV, for instance, is a comedy channel whereas Quzza TV, Zero Chills TV and Brian Sikulu TV are talk shows.
But why are the students so keen on investing in YouTube?
Any journalism field especially broadcast requires practical experience. Even before a student goes for attachment during his third year of studies, he or she is required to at least have some level of experience. Unfortunately, Moi University does not have a good platform for the students to gain these skills especially after the closure of the school's Television station, KTS TV. The students have therefore opted for YouTube where they can gain practical experience.
The hardest task for a journalism student looking for an opportunity at a top media station is to prove that she or he is indeed talented or good at presentation. This is where YouTube comes in handy since it compiles the previous works done by the student. This enables a student to showcase his or her ability in the field on a single link.
These are just a few of the many reasons as to why YouTube is trending at Moi University. In summary, YouTube is a practical laboratory for media students.
