Deputy President William Ruto has reaffirmed his opposition to the proposed constitutional amendments, saying that the country is not ready for the same.
Speaking in Busia county on Saturday, the DP criticized the proposed referendums seeking to expand the executive, in reference to the Building Bridges and Ugatuzi Initiatives.
The DP made the remarks while addressing congregants at Nangina Catholic Parish in Funyula, where he added that the nation cannot go to the polls to create slots for a few people.
He stressed on the need for Kenyans to quit the political debate and concentrate on matters development, saying that his quarters will not entertain the referendum issue.
“It’s not possible that we politic during general elections and continue with the same at the time we should be working hard to improve lives of residents. We will not entertain politics of creating positions for a few individuals at the expense of delivering services and empowering Kenyans," he Ruto said as quoted by Daily Nation.
He termed the ongoing referendum push as a plot by power-hungry politicians to accommodate themselves in government, urging them to patiently await the 2022 polls and try their lucks again.
"Those propagating this are power-hungry and selfish,” added the Deputy Head of State, whose allies have openly declared opposition to the BBI.
Ugatuzi Initiative, a proposal by the County of Governors (CoG), has proposed the introduction of the Prime Ministerial slots.
BBI is yet to make public their recommendations but it is thought it will also seek to create more political positions.
