Fishing is one of the biggest industries in Luo Nyanza, and the main food to some Luos, including those in far away towns.

To many Kenyans, catching fish entails embarking on a fishing expedition aboard boats in the Lake Victoria armed with nets.

But there are other funny ways used to capture these sweet water creatures called 'rech' in Dholuo.

Here are some of them;

1. Dinoo

Residents of Kano Plains at the outskirts of Kisumu City  are used to floods and rice irrigation.

In this area, water is pumped from River Nyando to the rice farms through trenches.

And when the pump stops and the water stagnates in the trenches, its easy to identify movements in the stagnant water.

Residents maximize on this by blocking two ends of the trench using reeds and mud in what is called dinoo (blocking), drain the water using basins, and pick the stranded fish.

However, at times, they meet frogs and snakes in the process. The fish caught this way are usually smaller in size.

2. House fishing

When it rains on most occasions, the clay soil fails to absorb all the water, some finding its way into people's houses.

When it does this, it brings with it fish and other water animals like frogs.

When the water finally dries or is drained, the fish remains behind and is prepared for dinner. Food without hustle.

3. When cultivating

After every harvest season, the rice farms remain muddy but this doesn't stop people from planting alternate crops as they await the next season.

Rice farms being completely muddy, the basin-like farms house fishes, specifically mud fish.

One can meet fish while cultivating.
