The Kyadondo East MP, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was on Monday charged with disobedience of statutory duty and remanded at Luzira Prison until Thursday, May 2, 2019 when his case will be mentioned.

Wine was arrested for leading "illegal" protests against the imposition of tax on social media networks by President Yoweri Museveni's regime.

His detention came after four days of house arrest and withdrawal of his security detail attached to his Kampala home.

Babu defended the musician-turned-politician saying he has not committed any crime, arguing that he was being persecuted for fighting injustice in his country.

"Freedom and democracy are under siege in Uganda and all those who hold these values dear must speak out! Bobi Wine’s only crime is being a young person who desires a better future for his fellow Ugandans," he said in a Facebook post.

The vocal MP accused Museveni of practising "archaic politics" and warned that he risks being removed from power by a civilian revolution as it has happened to other African dictators.

"I appeal to President Museveni to rid himself of this archaic politics of persecution. It has no future. It will only lead him down the same path as Gadaffi, Mubarak, Bouteflika and most recently, Omar Al Bashir," he said.

"President Museveni is a respected Pan-Africanist who will be remembered for his positive contribution to history only if he reads the signs of the times and allows democracy to prevail!" he added.
