A three-month-old baby died in Thua village, Kitui East on Friday after she was allegedly attacked by a baboon in a Shamba.
The baby is said to have been sleeping in the Shamba while the mum tilled the land when she was attacked by the baboon.
Area assistant chief Sammy Makuthu was quoted by Citizen Digital confirming the incident.
Makuthu said the baboon could have been hungry when it attacked the baby who sustained serious injuries in the stomach and knees.
She was rushed to Iyuu dispensary where she succumbed to the injuries.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kitui Level Four Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem.
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer in charge of Kitui county has been notified about the incident
KWS last month warned of increased human-wildlife conflict due to prolonged drought as wild animals have started abandoning their habitats in search of water and food.
"KWS wishes to inform the public that as the dry spell progresses, the risk of human-wildlife conflict is expected to increase until the country experiences long rains," a statement reads on the KWS website.
