The incident comes two months after a locomotive carrying 250,000 litres of super petrol derailed at Kibarani on May 20, with five wagons capsizing into the Indian Ocean.

11:00am: The Mombasa County Department of Transport, Infrastructure and public Works issued a statement saying:

"Today at around 0550 hrs we received a report that a train wagon containing petroleum has derailed at Kibarani tunnel just opposite Uganda property spilling super petrol. 

Our fire brigade team responded in good time to prevent any accident.

 The spilled petrol has since been covered with form and the Kenya railway Corporation is in the process of decanting the product into a waiting petrol tanker. 

The area has been sealed off until all the subsequent safety processes are done.

We apologize for the inconveniences caused."

Transport has been affected along areas of Changamwe, Mikindani, Port Reitz, Miritini, Jomvu, Mariakani, Magongo and Mazeras

Commuters have been forced to trek from both sides of the Kibarani bridge to catch matatus to their destinations.

The locomotive derailed near the Changamwe round-about, paralyzing transport along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Coast Region Traffic Commandant Emmanuel Okanda has confirmed the incident. He said super petrol spilled authorities to close the road.

The petroleum products are estimated to be 100,000 litres.
