Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has averted a looming nurses' strike in the county.
This comes after the county boss on Monday directed the immediate implementation of the return to work formula after holding a meeting with the nurses in his office.
Addressing journalists after signing the agreement, Waititu stated that the Kiambu County Government values the work done by nurses and would thus honour the deal.
"We shall honour the return to work formulae which was signed on November 27, 2017, between the Council of Governors, the national government and the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN). We value the work done by nurses in Kiambu and we can not therefore afford to lose even a single day or a single minute of their services due to strike. All of us know that this is their right and the allowances they want is their right," said Waititu.
The outspoken governor further noted that the county government will pay nurses beginning Friday through their payslips, adding that the money will be deposited in their bank accounts.
According to the return to work formula, the nurses in the county are entitled to an increase in the nursing service allowance of Sh3,000 per month in the financial year 2018/2019 and Sh3,500 in the 2019/2020 and 2020/ 2021 financial years. They will also benefit from a uniform allowance increase of Sh5,000 per year in the three phases.
Following the deliberation between the two entities, the nurses union called off the strike which was slated for February 6, 2019.
