Since independence in 1963, there have been occurrences happening in the country in the month of August that make people afraid of this month. Accidents, deaths of famous people, assassinations, bombings and natural calamities have rocked this month of August every year.
Here are a few occurrences that happened in the month of August that shock the whole nation:
1. Deaths of famous personalities
On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, the world lost a hero; Nicholas Bett. On August 22, 1978, Kenya lost its founding President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. On August 23, 2003, the Luhya nation lost a hero, former Vice President Kijana Wamalwa. Other famous leaders who died in August include; Masinde Muliro (1992) and Martin Shikuku (August 22, 2012) among others.
2. CoupOn August 1, 1982, Kenya witnessed an abortive coup that saw over 100 soldiers and 200 residents killed. The 12 hours coup cost the nation Sh500 million. The country was hit hard on its socio-economic circles by this attempted coup.
3. BombingOn August 7, 1998, Nairobi witnessed one of the most horrifying incidences when the American Embassy was bombed in a terror attack that saw over 200 people dead and left more than 500 seriously injured.
4. AssassinationsVarious prominent leaders were killed in the month of August. Here are good examples, Father John Kaiser of the Catholic Church on August 23, 2000, University of Nairobi student leader Titus Adungosi in August 1988 and Anglican Bishop Alexander Kipsang Muge on August 14, 1990.
These three incidences could be used to represent the many bad things that happen in the month of August.
