Communication Authority of Kenya chief Francis Wangusi had his suggestion to switch off sim cards of not listed in Huduma Namba registration rejected by State House on Thursday.

In an address before backtracking, Wangusi threatened to have the Sim cards blocked after the end of 45 days ultimatum. He also promised to have registration of Sim cards done with the Huduma Namba.

“Once the 45 day registration exercise is over, we shall engage mobile operators to switch off the SIM Cards,” Wangusi said in an interview with the Nation. He said if the government extended the registration, the switching off would also be extended.

But in a quick rejoinder, Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita dismissed the move, insisting that the government of Kenya will not force anyone to have his or her details taken until the court makes such a ruling.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Huduma Namba registration is a voluntary exercise in compliance with the ruling of the Courts,” Mr Waita said in a tweet.

“There is no directive from the government to institute any punitive measures against those who don’t register. More emphasis will be laid on civic education!” he added.

Last month, a court sitting in Nairobi ruled that the government was in order to continue with digital listing of people but insisted the exercise will not be mandatory until a case filed by KNHC is heard and determined.

The exercise cost government Sh7.2 billion but seems to have started on a wrong foot due to resistance from a section of Kenyans who believe it's unlawful.
