Even as campaigns to have a referendum before the 2022 general elections intensify, more leaders are rising up to issue their positions on the exercise that is expected to shape the next elections.
The latest politician to make public his stand on the thorny referendum issue is the former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim.
In a Sunday tweet, Maalim revealed that the exercise is a must, claiming it is the only way that change can be brought to the country.
The vocal Garissa politician also wants presidential term limits removed, a fact that might be interpreted as indirectly drumming support for President Kenyatta to extent his term at the presidency.
"The political contest in Kenya today is not between individuals but between systems. It's between a parliamentary system and current Presidential system with term limits removed(similar to Djibouti&Uganda).Either way referendum is a must & system will change. Change is constant," Maalim tweeted.
Maalim now joins other politicians who have expressed their intentions to support the move.
Among the politicians who have since rallied behind the exercise include governor Ali Korane of Garissa and his Mandera counterpart Ali Roba.
