Athletics icon Nyantika Mayioro served in powerful positions in his sporting career before he met his death on Sunday.

Nyantika, a pioneer Kenyan athlete built international repute while competing for team Kenya under the British colonial rule in 1956 in Melbourne Australia.

Mr. Mayioro upon his retirement from sports he served as Nyamira District sports officer.

He later served as the Gusii stadium manager.

Among his major successes in athletics was his 3000 meters race victory at the 1953 Indian Ocean Games in Madagascar.

He originated from a humble background and he could compete with his opponents barefooted, in his athletics debut.

Mayioro succumbed to tuberculosis on Sunday evening at Christa Marianne hospital Kisii where he was receiving treatment for the last two weeks. 

Mayioro hails from Kiogoro in Nyaribari Chache, Kisii County. 

His death came after he appealed to leaders to intervene and help clear his hospital bill, an appeal that landed on deaf ears. 

A section of leaders in Kisii county have mourned Mr. Mayioro's death among them Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tong'i, Governor James Ongwae and his Deputy Joash Maangi.
