Nairobi governor Mike Sonko now wants landlords and landladies who have encroached and built on public land to demolish the structures.
Sonko says that some rogue landlords have encroached on public land especially in Nairobi’s Eastlands.
According to the Nairobi governor, the encroachment has made it hard for his government to implement development projects.
He said that the ongoing demolitions will not spare buildings that are on public land.
"We are going to be ruthless on anyone who has grabbed public land including landlords who constructed illegal structures on public land,” he said.
Governor Sonko asked tenants in buildings that are sitting on public land to vacate.
“The county government has issued notices for them to vacate as we move to demolish the structures,” he said on Sunday when he visited families that lost their loved ones and property in a fire incident at Silanga ward, Kibra constituency.
The governor noted that 40 percent of buildings in Nairobi sit on public land making it difficult for road expansions.
Sonko said that he is determined to clean up Nairobi and restore investor confidence in the city.
He added that the ongoing demolition on riparian land is for the interest and benefit of city dwellers.
