However, she has only been in an elective seat for one term of five years, when she served as Governor Jack Ranguma's deputy between 2013 and 2017.

The latter has claimed that she has been in politics since birth, considering that her father and founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was a political chief.

Ruth claims that she was into politics immediately after birth in the 1960s, and addressed her first rally as a young girl when Jaramogi began introducing her to the masses.

In an interview with the Standard in 2017, Ruth claimed that her breakthrough came when she accompanied her father to a rally in Ugunja, Siaya county in the 60s.

Oginga was then deep into politics and had made a habit of dragging Ruth along whenever he attended his political functions and events.

"I started accompanying him to political rallies from the age of five. But I can remember addressing my first political rally in Ugunja (in Ugenya, Siaya County) when I was about seven years old," she is quoted.

On this day, the young girl got a chance to address the people and probably because of her young age, could only chant 'Dume', the Kenya People's Union (KPU)slogan.

"After addressing the crowd, my dad introduced me and asked me to say something. I didn’t say much, except shouting “Ndume!” the Kenya People’s Union (KPU) slogan," she added.

And that is how she began her political journey.
