President Uhuru Kenyatta currently appears to be at crossroads with regards to the 2022 presidential race, though he is well aware that his endorsement will be heavily sought by aspirants.
The race is currently deemed to pit Deputy President William Ruto against opposition boss Raila Odinga, both of whom are close to the President following the famous March 9, 2018 handshake.
However, in the instance that Raila and Ruto face off for the top seat, then Uhuru is most likely to side with the DP in order to protect himself from future problems.
This will have everything to do with his case against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which also involves his deputy.
Their cases were withdrawn after clinching the presidency in 2013 and Uhuru will be more comfortable with Ruto in power, to ensure that his case is not revived once out of power.
Also, to ensure that he doesn't face prosecutions for the massive corruption scandals that befell the government when he was in power, Ruto is his only option.
Though most of the blame has been heaped on the DP, it is worth noting that Uhuru leads the government and might have cases launched to hold him accountable in the coming years.
He will, therefore, be depending on Ruto's protection considering that Ruto is also part of the government and is unlikely to allow for investigations that could implicate them.
It is only through Ruto who has always been close to him and aware of his development initiatives and their progress that Uhuru can realise his legacy, especially on physical projects.
In the event that Raila takes over, then he is likely to introduce his own projects and place those initiated by Uhuru aside, which will see him not leave the legacy he intends to.
Ruto, on the other hand, is more likely to complete them and hand Uhuru the legacy.
Therefore, Uhuru is very likely to finally endorse Ruto as his preferred candidate and possible successor.
