During the yesteryears, Thika was known as the 'industrial town' as it had several factories ranging from fruit canners, tailoring and embroidery, motor vehicle assembly among others.
But with many of these factories gone, Thika no longer prides of the same though some other things have come in as a replacement.
For instance, Thika is an education hub being the home to Mount Kenya University, Gretsa University and several middle-level colleges.
However, education is not the only thing that defines Thika today. The town also has a lively nightlife that attracts revellers from far and wide. This has, in turn, come with other things like prostitution.

They don't care about where you stay as long as you commit yourself to meet your end of the bargain the following morning. They are mostly found on roadsides and streets where they hunt for prospective customers. They are hawk-eyed to be able to detect a client from far.
Quickies: These are the cheap type who just want a quick one at a very negotiable price. Sometimes from as low as Sh100. Most of them are stray college girls who are never satisfied with the pocket money their parents give them. They also line the streets as they have no money to afford a drink in any liquor joint.
Elite squad: You will know them by their expensive wears and weaves. They are executive in nature and do not entertain every Tom, Dick and Harry who approaches them. They look for revellers with heavy pockets and you cannot lay them in any ordinary brothel. One client a day is just enough for them. You will find them in high-end bars within the town.
Creditors: As the name goes, they can be available on credit provided the client pays on the agreed future date. They are usually unkempt with smelly weaves and can fall for anybody. They operate mainly around estates.
'Desperados': They are desperate for both money and men. The potential client is the one who spells out the terms and the price. They literally have no control over anything including themselves. They spend most of their time drinking cheap liquor and smoking equally cheap cigarettes. They are also known to pick fights with many revellers to attract attention.
