Addressing residents of Kondele in Kisumu County, the former Prime Minister maintained that the island is part of Kenya.

He promised to intervene to stop the many reported harassment of Kenyan fishermen by Ugandan authorities manning the lake.

Odinga added that he has since reached out to Museveni over the same, and the two of them have already set the date for the important discussion.

“We recently spoke with Museveni, and we are set to meet again soon, he said that there must be an agreement in the issue of Migingo to establish where our (Kenya’s) boundary lies and where Uganda’s boundary lies,” he was quoted by the Citizen Digital on Monday.

The tiny island has for a long time been a bone of contention between Kenya and the neighboring Uganda, both nations maintaining that it is on their side of Lake Victoria.

The island is believed to be surrounded by fish rich waters hence the continued fight, with Kenyan fishermen reporting cases of arrests and extortion by the Ugandan police.

The veteran politician, therefore, called for calm among the fishermen as he strives to completely settle the issue.
