Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren is the latest politician to weigh in on the introduction of the new currency by Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge during the Madaraka Day celebrations.
The Jubilee MP opined that the new currency is aimed at taming runaway corruption in the country.
“Corruption has led to many people hiding a lot of money in their houses fearing to take them to banks but by changing the currencies they will be forced to use the money before the deadline to ease the circulation of the currency,” said the second-term Jubilee MP.
Tiren spoke when he joined faithful at St Georges ACK Tachaasis in celebrating the church's fiftieth anniversary.
“Why do you put a lot of money in the house if it’s genuine, are there no banks? They have run away from banks because if you bank one million and above you are supposed to explain where you got the money from,” added the Jubilee rebel MP.
Tiren thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for the introduction of the new currency, noting it will help in fighting graft.
This comes after Njoroge on Saturday introduced new generation banknotes of Sh50, Sh100, Sh200, Sh500 and Sh1,000.
