Kwale Senior Resident Magistrate Patrick Wambugu on Wednesday denied 17 suspected Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) members bail.
The prosecution led by Cecilia Wakoli requested the court to allow detention of the suspects for two weeks.
Wakoli told the court that the group was linked to an attack on police officers on patrol in Diani at Ibiza area.
According to the prosecution, the attack was retaliatory action against the arrest. It stated that the attackers were armed with guns where one person was killed while a police officer was admitted at Msambweni Referral Hospital after sustaining a leg injury.
“Immediately after the arrest of the MRC members, police on a patrol in Diani were attacked by unknown suspects and for that reason, we request the court to deny the suspects bond terms,” said a state council as reported by Baraka FM.
The suspects aged between 40 and 80 years were charged for convening a public meeting without informing relevant authorities. The meeting had been convened in Diani at Kibundani area. The second charge was an incitement to violence after being found with materials printed “Pwani si Kenya”.
They pleaded not guilty to the two charges and were remanded at Kwale G.K Prison.
Mention for the case has been set for April 18, 2019.
