The political debt debate which has been discussed widely in the past few days seems to continue taking shape.
On Monday during the burial of Migori Senator Ben Oluoch Okello, the talk took centre stage with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino saying the people of Mt Kenya owe a huge debt to their patriots in Nyanza region.
Speaking at Kanyimach village at the home of the departed lawmaker, Babu reminded the people from Mt Kenya that they are yet to return the favour after their 'son' Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was helped by Jaramogi Odinga Odinga take over as the head of state during independence.
The vocal MP also said the Luo community also supported retired President Mwai Kibaki rise to the presidency in 2002 through the famous declaration by area political kingpin Raila Odinga of 'Kibaki Tosha', a 'debt' the people from the mountains are yet to honour.
"The first debt was the political pact between Jaramogi and Mzee Kenyatta while the second one was between Raila and Kibaki. Before you pay Ruto's (Deputy President) debt, you have to pay ours first," Babu said amid cheers from the mourners.
And in a statement that seems like a response to the MP, Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata said there were plans to give Raila a prime position in government.
"In Central Kenya where I come from, we are supporting calls to amend the Constitution to expand the Executive ahead of 2022 and once that is done Raila will occupy a big seat in government," Kang'ata said.
On Sunday Ruto dismissed political debt talk saying there was no person or community that owe anybody, including himself, anything.
"I want to remind leaders what Paul says in Romans 13:8; "Owe no man nothing expect the debt of love for one another," the DP said.
The debate has been sparked by a viral song composed by Kiambu popular musician Kimani Wa Turacco "Hatuna Deni ya Mtu, Kieleweke'.
