On a Nairobi County Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee meeting held on Tuesday, the city inspectorate officers were alleged to lack skills on distinguishing between fake and genuine licences.

According to Robert Mbatia who is the committee chairman, officers have been only trained on the enforcement and therefore, have no skills in technical duties, especially on licence verification.

Mbatia who is the Kariobangi South Member of County Assembly further lamented that the enforcement officers perform their duties without technical teams' support.

This, he revealed affects permits scrutinization as officers lack skills.

“This has led to an increase in harassment cases, which has affected revenue performance as compliance has been low,” the MCA said as quoted by Daily Nation.

The issue of arresting business people without any genuine reason by enforcement officers was also raised during the meeting.

Nairobi County Security and Compliance Chief Officer Tito Kilonzi, however, promised to look into the matter pointing out that it was against the law.

“Wrongfully arresting innocent city residents in the name of searching for non-compliant business owners is wrong and a violation of the people’s rights. I will ensure my officers desist from such,” said Kilonzi
