A murder suspect unsuccessfully attempted to dash for freedom from Migori law courts on Wednesday before he was nabbed by officers minutes later.
The drama started at 11:30 am while the man identified as Edwin Otieno Wanyara called on the officer escorting him from courts holding the cell to take him to the toilet.
As Wanyara was being escorted back to the court, he mischievously made a dash from court premises, scaled over a wall and ran towards a nearby forest, Patrick Kingori, Migori OCPD said.
He ran for about 200 meters and was just a few meters at the edge of the dense forest when he was brought into a halt as officers fired in the air.
The first shot by the escorting officer alerted his colleagues who sprang into action and made a chase to the suspect, Kingori said.
Wanyara, confused by the shots and a huge number of members of the public from nearby Huduma Center who turned out to see what was happening stood dazed as several officers pounced on him.
Court proceedings at the busy court were temporarily halted before they resumed moments later.
Kingori said the suspect was brought in from outside Migori station as the Migori High Court serves Migori and parts of Narok county.
The suspect has decided to go mute at the station, we are trying to get more details about his crime, he said.
He will face charges of attempted escape from lawful custody, Kingori added.
