When he landed in Garissa in 2017 aboard a military chopper, dignitaries lined up to shake his hand.
They stretched their hands excitedly towards him except one woman.
President Uhuru stretched his hand towards her but Isiolo Women Rep Jaldesa Dida held back, choosing only to flash a salute.
The president was blindsided by that unexpected gesture, leaving him in an embarrassing situation as the cameras rolled and flashed.
It would later emerge that the women rep had refused to shake President Uhuru's hand out of respect for Islamic dictates that prohibit unmarried members of the opposite sex from getting into contact.
This embarrassing moment for the head of state would prove to be a learning moment for him, an epiphany of sorts.
And he did learn but the hard way.
After the incident, Uhuru knew better how to deal with Islamic women and since then the president has been keen to avoid unnecessary contact with Islamic women out of respect for their faith.
Nowadays he usually brings palms together as a form of greeting to Muslim women.
