When President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled his new government early this year, he retained Dr Eng. Karanja Kibicho as the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Interior in the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Goverment.

The President had on November 24, 2015, moved Kibicho to the powerful docket from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade where he also served as a PS.

Speaking to Provincial Administrators in Nyamira County about two years ago, Kibicho revealed that from that day Uhuru moved him to the ministry charged with the national security, he stopped taking alcohol since as a PS in the sensitive docket he is required to be alert round-the-clock.

"I used to take alcohol moderately. But when I was appointed to this post (Interior PS), I have never drunk because I know that I am required to be very alert and keen at all times," Kibicho was quoted by a local daily.

Interestingly, his immediate boss, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery was a lover of beer his favourite drink being Tusker.

He was a frequent visitor at Bomas of Kenya lounge where he would catch up with friends and took two beers and occasionally three but never more than that.

"Whenever he came, he would sit at the public counter, order drinks and even offer to pay for the other patrons," said a reveller at the bar.

On the day he died on July 7, 2017, the powerful CS  had dropped in at the entertainment joint and took a drink before heading home where he collapsed before being rushed to Karen Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
