Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to come to the rescue of maize and wheat farmers.
The MP who has been branded as a rebel in the Jubilee party says the president is the only one who can help ensure farmers woes come to an end once and for all.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Tiren expressed his worries that farmers have been suffering for a long time yet no measures have been put in place to address their concerns.
“Farmers have been complaining for long over delays in their pay among other things yet nobody seems to care. This is even as we keep saying agriculture is the backbone of this nation,” lamented the legislator.
He said it was time the president took his personal initiative and address the farmers concerns if he is serious about his administrations' big four agenda which food security is among them.
“I want to urge the president, please come and rescue farmers who have been subjected to a lot of challenges and sufferings,” said Tiren.
The two-time legislator also expressed support to farmer’s resolution not to participate in a fresh vetting exercise that had been directed by the Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
Last week Wamalwa had announced that the government had released Sh1.4 billion to be used to pay farmers who supplied maize to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) but said the payments would be released after a fresh vetting exercise.
Farmers have however objected to the fresh vetting claiming it has a hidden agenda.
