There were demonstrations outside the Kisumu County headquarters on Thursday after angry riders stormed the premises to protest against a daily fee imposed on them by the county government.
The group stormed a meeting between Finance CeC Nelly Achar and a section of their leaders, arguing that the leaders are being used by the county to force them to pay the fee.
They dismissed the group which is said to have reached a consensus with the county to have them pay a Sh20 daily fee, accusing the county leadership of using divide and rule tactics to impose the fee on them.
Fred Ouma, the chairman of one of the umbrella bodies, said that the county is working in cohorts with some Sacco leaders to realise the tax, claiming that other leaders have been left out of the deliberations, hence the resistance.
"I'm the chair of one of the associations and we are not okay with what the county has done with some of the Sacco leaders without consulting us," he told Capital News.
He said that the county should not expect to receive the fee until it recognises the right leaders and includes them in the deliberations, while the riders said that they see no value for their money.
They claimed that the roads remain in a terrible state despite the county government demanding for more money.
They also want Governor Anyang' Nyong'o to construct shades for them at their stages before demanding the money.
