According to Winnie Chepkorir, one of the victims, they suspect it was an arson attack conducted by her estranged boyfriend whom she recently separated with.

The victim claims that the boyfriend had contacted her early Sunday urging her to get back with him and threatened to harm her when she refused.

“I had been living with him for eight months but last week we differed and I fled his house at Suswa trading centre. He has been pursuing me but I told him I will never get back to him. I suspect he could be behind the incident,” she told the Standard.

She added that she had reported the threats to Suswa Police Post but was instead devised to leave town as the police could not intervene.

“The officer we found told us that there was nothing he could do. He told us that even if he arrested the boyfriend he would be released, and that the best thing to do was to flee. But unfortunately, the incident happened before I left,” she added.

Medics at the hospital said the woman and her counterparts Diana Chepkemoi (32), Monica Nyambura (38) and Nancy Chepkemoi (32) sustained 15-30 percent burns on their faces and limbs.

Chepkorir, who was being housed at Nancy's house, said one of them detected the fire before it spread and opened the door enabling them to escape.

Residents then came to their rescue and rushed them to hospital.

Confirming the incident, Narok North OCPD Joseph Kisombe said police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
