The controversial murder of British wildlife photographer Julie Ward resurfaced on Saturday, nearly 31 years after her lifeless body was discovered in Maasai Mara game reserve deep in the thickets.
Outspoken lawyer Miguna Miguna has faulted President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga for hailing Mr Jonathan Moi, a son to retired President Daniel Moi, as a kind man, adding that the deceased elder son of Moi should have been jailed for Julie's murder.
“Your Excellency, our collective thoughts and prayers as a family and as a country are with you, your family and friends during this difficult period of mourning. May the Almighty God rest the soul of our brother and friend Jonathan Toroitich Moi in eternal peace,” President Kenyatta said.
He described the late Jonathan Moi, popularly known as JT, as humble, kind, generous and courageous. “JT’s word was always his bond, he was dependable,” President Kenyatta added.
On his part, Raila, who is known to have suffered during Moi regime, wished the family 'God's strength during this hard times'. Jonathan died on Saturday at Nakuru with sources saying he has been suffering from Pancreatic Cancer.
"My family and that of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga send deeply felt condolences to President Daniel arap Moi following the death of Jonathan Moi earlier today. We wish strength to the former President and his family to bear the loss. May God grant peace to the family at this sad moment," Raila wrote.
But Miguna Miguna, who has since been denied entry to Kenya, accused the two leaders of sanitising Mr Jonathan upon his death. However, Mr Moi has never been dragged to court despite his name featuring in the murder.
"IRONCLAD evidence proves that Jonathan Moi MURDERED Julie Ward in 1988 at the Maasai Mara but instead of serving the rest of his life in jail, Uhuru Kenyatta and @RailaOdinga mourn Jonathan as "kind, generous and humble." Real patriots should sweep despots to the Indian Ocean," Miguna said.
Julie's father hired Scotland Yard detectives to probe the death but three decades later, no answer is yet to be given. Only three game rangers were dragged to court but we're not convicted due to lack of evidence.
The government of Kenya was accused of tampering with evidence with the family of Julie demanding for prosecutions. Mr Jonathan Moi's name was adversely mentioned in the cruel 1988 murder.
