Youths living with disabilities in Uasin Gishu county have a reason to smile following the support from the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD).
The youths most many of who are mentally challenged on Monday received tools of trade valued at over Sh 2 million in what the Uasin Gishu NCPWD coordinator Titus Yego said will help empower them financially.
Speaking in Eldoret during the distribution of the tools to the beneficiaries, Yego said the move is meant to help the disabled youths employ themselves.
"We gave priority to the mentally challenged because they are unlikely to get an employment hence decided that we empower them to get self-employment," said Yego.
10 youths benefited from the support where they received sewing kits, farm kits, welding kits and shoemaking kits.
"The beneficiaries were selected from across the county with the neediest being give the first priority," noted the NCPWD Uasin Gishu coordinator.
The tools of trade were distributed under a pilot project being conducted across the country with more disabled youths set to benefit once the initiative is fully rolled out.
Yego further applauded the county government of Uasin Gishu for recently employing 34 youths who are disabled on top of the hearing impaired who have been contracted to do provide cleaning services at the county headquarters in Eldoret town.
Statistics indicate that Uasin Gishu has over 7,000 youths living with various disabilities.
