Former Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim has thrown his weight behind a constitutional amendment that will change Kenya's structure of governance; from a presidential system to a parliamentary system.

Maalim contends that the current system of government is costly to the Kenyan taxpayer and wants it changed through a popular amendment.

Posting on his Twitter handle Wednesday, he said that the presidential system was not working well.

"I have always advocated for either a Parliamentary or a Hybrid system of Government. A pure Presidential system isn't working well even in the US. We must amend our Constitution before 2022 to rationalise the blotted Govt, representation&devolution units. Must be lean&effective," the tweet read.

Maalim's post adds to the growing chorus of high-profile individuals who support a change of the country's governance system.

The call was first made by veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga during a governors' conference.

His tweet comes in the wake of a raging national debate on the prospect of a constitutional amendment.
