About 1,000 casual workers operating under the County Public Service Board (CPSB) will be laid off.

Some locals have already taken to social media to condemn the MCAs for their passing this motion.

The motion moved by Kayafungo MCA Alphonse Mwayaa seeks to terminate the services of all casual workers within the County Public Service except for casual workers in the dispensaries.

In his motion, Mwayaa also targeted to lay off all the staff employed by the chief officers on contract and casual basis without the knowledge of the CPSB.

Speaking on the phone, Mwayaa said on Thursday that the motion aims to ensure that the law is followed entirely so that residents use the approved means to secure jobs.

“We want to ensure that the issue of nepotism and tribalism is something of the past. People should seek fresh employment on qualifications,” said the Kayafungo MCA.

At the same time, he said the motion is also aimed at reducing the wage bill which was being consumed by ‘ghost workers', citing the department of water alone has about 478 casual workers making the department consume Sh17 million for every quarter of the year.

Sokoni MCA Gilbert Peru took to the social media to criticise his Kayafungo counterpart saying the move is aimed at undermining the youths who are struggling to get employment.

“While some leaders address issues of youth department being underfunded, you are busy supporting such a misguided motion. You are a disgrace to the youth,” said Peru who skipped the sitting.

Responding to the looming issue on the phone, County Secretary Arnold Mkare said that although the matter is complicated, they will try to solve it amicably.

Last week, about 400 casual workers from the department of water demonstrated in Malindi after their jobs were terminated.
