Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga's decision to pitch camp in Migori county was a miscalculated move.
The leader is currently in the county on a two day-campaign tour, as he drums support for Ochilo Ayacko for the vacant Migori senatorial seat.
However, this is most likely to work to the advantage of Ayacko's opponent Eddy Oketch instead, with the youthful candidate who remains all alone set to impressively stand out.
Using Odinga's presence in the county to fight him as an excuse, Oketch will easily portray Ayacko as an incompetent leader who cannot personally convince the people to vote for him, hence the inclusion of one of the biggest political figures in the nation.
This way, he will have relegated the former Cabinet Minister's leadership abilities in the eyes of the people resulting to more votes in his basket.
This is with consideration that Oketch is yet to get any official endorsement from any of the nation's top leaders, despite being rumoured to be working with Deputy President William Ruto.
Odinga is also yet to understand that the nation is now switching to fresh and youthful leadership, with majority of Kenyans being the youth.
Instead, he is in the county to campaign for a veteran politician and a former Member of Parliament, which is a show of rigidity and unwillingness to change and give Kenyans what they want.
Using his youthfulness, Oketch who is only 27-years old will now have a solid reason to incite the voters against both Ayacko and the Orange party for recycling leaders.
And having never been elected, he will be easily sellable, as opposed to Ayacko whose failures are well known, having served as the Rongo parliamentarian at some point.
Finally, in most of the rallies, Raila has used most of his time publicizing his referendum push, leaving out the real reason why he is in the county.
Because of this, his move seems as largely aimed at martialing support for the referendum and not Ayacko, and is not against Oketch as such.
And with the referendum push on its initial stages, Oketch can rest easy knowing that Raila is more absorbed in the amendment debate than locking him out of the senate.
