The 2015 World 400 meters hurdles Champion Nicholas Bett was finally laid to rest at his Simat rural home, Uasin Gishu county on Thursday.
Deputy President William Ruto led hundreds of top government officials and politicians as well as former and current athletes in giving Bett, who was eulogized as a hero, a befitting sendoff.
Speaking during the funeral, Ruto eulogized Bett as a champion whose talent and class was shown through the world competitions.
"Bett was an inspiration to the youth; a fitting example that with hard work and God's favor, one can achieve anything," he said.
The DP also noted that Bett's exploits on the track won him admiration, recognition and a place in the history books.
He also described the fallen hero as a kind soul, considerate, unassuming and generous.
Ruto who also represented President Uhuru Kenyatta said they had given Bett's family Sh2 million that will help in the upkeep of the family on top of the Sh2 the family is expected to get from the insurance cover of the athlete who was a police officer until his untimely death.
Bett died last Wednesday following a tragic accident along the Eldoret-Kapsabet road while heading back home after representing the country in the African Championships in Nigeria.
Other top government officials present during the burial include Cabinet Secretaries Farida Koaronei (Lands) and his Sports counterpart Rashid Achesa and several governors among them the host, Jackson Mandago among other governors and legislators.
