Barely a week after meeting Kakamega Governor and opposition leader Raila Odinga's close ally Wycliffe Oparanya, a group of former Central Kenya lawmakers on Monday met Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi.
The one hour close door meeting was held at Mudavadi's Riverside residence in Nairobi. It brought together nine former leaders, among them two Deputy Governors.
Speaking after the meeting, the group leader and former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe said that the meeting was solely based on bettering the nation going forward.
He added that it had nothing to do with the heating 2022 election debate.
Instead, he said, they addressed the growing push for referendum from some political quarters and how Kenya can best approach the issue.
“It is our view that the Constitution must be responsive to the needs of Kenyans. There are certain tenets of the supreme law that we need to have another look at.
We need to correct them because they may not have come out correctly during the last review,” said Kagwe, according to the Nation.
On his side, Mudavadi said that the referendum seems inevitable and its time for the nation to concentrate on its content
“The issue is not whether we should amend the Constitution, it's what will be the referendum question. That was the basis of our meeting,” he said.
The leaders present included former Deputy Governors Gakure Monyo (Murang'a), Gerald Githinji (Kiambu), former Senators Kembi Gitura (Murang'a) and Daniel Karaba (Kirinyaga).
Also present were a number of former Members of the National Assembly. The group held a similar meeting with Oparanya on Tuesday last week.
