Drama was witnessed at Nyatieko, Kitutu Chache South in Kisii County, on Thursday evening after a middle-aged man was caught stealing his neighbour's chicken.
Confirming the incident area Chief Lawrence Omari said the suspect, Alloys Nyaanga, sneaked into his neighbour's homestead without anyone noticing.
"Nyaanga was found red-handed stealing chicken by the owner who raised alarm. Members of the public stormed the homestead and nabbed him before he could run away," said Omari.
The administrator said the suspect was clobbered by angry locals before he was rescued by Nyumba Kumi officials.
"Were it not for Nyumba Kumi officials the suspect could have been set on fire. He was surrendered to my office with one chicken he tried to run away with," he stated.
Omari said the locals threatened to lynch the suspect which forced him to surrender immediately to Nyatieko police post and he will be aligned in court on Friday.
He warned local youths against stealing saying the law will not condone criminals.
The chief challenged youths to venture into small businesses to boost their lives instead of stealing people's property.
