There’s no doubt that embattled Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado is still a popular figure in his home county.
He continues to receive massive support from his supporters and a big section of leaders in the Migori county government and assembly.
That perhaps explains why no impeachment motion has been tabled in the Migori County assembly, as the county chief continues to battle allegations of having a hand in the murder of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
In 2013, he was elected on the little known PDP party ticket in a region dominated by the ODM party, bringing to fore the fact that his popularity was in no doubt.
But why does he remain popular in the face of murder charges against him? First, the governor was born and raised in Migori, therefore most residents feel he is their own, and hence the need to stand with him.
Before his arrest, he supported most locals especially during funerals, and fundraisers for different community initiatives, earning him massive grassroots support.
Secondly, Obado is a former Rapogi High School student and teacher. A big percentage of teachers in the border county support him since they perceive him as one of their own. With governor Obado at the helm, they believe that they are in a safe pair of hands.
Lastly, the governor is a former Chairman of the Kenya Sugar Board. During his time in office, he closely worked with sugarcane farmers in the region.
With Migori County being a sugar cane plantation area, most farmers resonate with his ideas on improving the sugar sector, and thus wish him well in his current preicament.
