Kisii County Governor James Ongwae is serving his second and final term in office.
As the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party governor serves his final term, he has not hinted on what he plans to do after 2022 when his term ends.
Ongwae has also not hinted on who could be his 2022 successor, though there is talk that he could endorse his deputy Joash Maangi for the top county position.
Governor Owgae is considered among vocal Gusii politicians and his political voice is likely to play out in the raging 2022 succession politics in the region.
Gusii is no doubt one of the region's to watch out in in the coming 2022 general election.
In 2017 general election, the region that has in the past been considered as opposition stronghold voted for Jubilee Party.
Governor Ogwae now will be tasked to ensure that the region backs the opposition should ODM Party leader Raila Odinga opt to contest the presidency in 2022.
Ongwae is a close ally of Raila and has for years drummed up the opposition leader’s support among Gusii people.
However, with the growing rebellion against opposition politics by some emerging youthful politicians in Gusii land, Ogwae could have a hard time in convincing residents to support Raila should he opt to contest in 2022 election.
The Kisii County boss can also opt to retire from active politics after 10 years’ service to Kisii people but this is likely not to be an option for him.
It is a matter of time before we know the political direction Governor Ongwae will be taking once his term expires in 2022.
