On Wednesday, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s wife Susan Wangare Ndung’u, was arrested alongside other 14 people in Nairobi over the alleged illegal construction of buildings.
They were arrested by a multi-sectoral team comprising Nairobi County inspectorate officers in an ongoing crackdown targeting properties built on riparian or on government land.
In Wangare's case, she was charged in court with illegal occupation of a building and was released on Sh80, 000 cash bail. The case is set for mention on September 6.
Here are the details of the building which landed Waititu's wife in court.
It is located along University Way, on Koinange Street to be precise. It was purchased by Governor Waititu for Sh250 million. However, the Governor paid the amount in excess by Sh20 million as he wanted to make part of the building a hotel.
More details reveal that the 7-storied building was purchased from Jamii Bora bank earlier this year.
By the time of their arrest, Wangare was overseeing the improvements and extensions on the property.
However, after their arrest, Waititu made a phone call to the Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko pleading for the release of all those captured.
Sonko agreed to let her off but for the rest, he told Waititu that there were orders from above which he would not go against because he crossed the line in letting Wangare off the hook.
