Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is under investigations over possible links to the Sonko Defence Forces (SDF), which the police have classified as a militia group.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also sought his help in summoning three Members of the Nairobi County Assembly who are allegedly involved with the group.
The DCI wants the attention of Anthony Kiragu Karanja (Waithaka), Patricia Patricia Mutheu (Mlango Kubwa) and a Jubilee nominated MCA over the 'illegal' group's activities.
The group came to the limelight on May 1, when it temporarily disrupted Labour Day Celebrations in Nairobi, before confronting officers who attempted to contain them.
However, the county boss has dismissed claims that he is involved with groups disrupting peace in the city, noting that he is actually using his money to maintain security in Nairobi.
He claimed that he has police informers in his payroll, detecting Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho's hand in the claims, and urging the police to stop harassing MCAs.
Stop intimidating and threatening members of the Nairobi City County Assembly…No amount of intimidation will stop me and the County Assembly Members from exercising our democratic rights,” he was quoted by the Nation.
He admitted having knowledge of the group, but argued that they are young people deployed in the ingoing beautification exercise within Tue city, and are therefore not criminals.
