Mama Maria is the wife to the founding President of the country, the late Julius Nyerere.

In a tweet after the meeting, the former Prime Minister revealed that they deliberated on the historical relationship between Kenya and Tanzania.

"Had a pleasant meeting with Mama Maria Nyerere at her home in Dar es Salaam this morning. We had a great discussion on the shared history of our two nations and it was great seeing her in high spirits," he said.

The meeting came only hours after another with Tanzanian President John Magufuli whom he met at the Dar Es Salaam Statehouse.

In another tweet, Raila said that they used the meeting to discuss various matters affecting the East African region.

"I paid a courtesy call on my friend President @MagufuliJP this morning. We compared notes on regional issues," he said.

Raila travelled to Tanzania over the weekend for the Sportpesa Cup matches pitting Kenyan and Tanzanian premier league sides.

He caused a scare among Kenyans after a clip of what looked like him collapsing after handing over the trophy to Kenya's Kariobangi Sharks emerged.

Sharks defeated another Kenyan team, Bandari, in the finals.

However, his press team has since cleared the air on the incident, saying that he slipped after a side of the podium where he was standing collapsed.
