Eddy Wandera who works at a morgue in Kisumu has shared his personal journey as a mortician and his worst experience at work.
On the sunny evening of 23rd February 2017, the Maseno University postgraduate student joined his friend (Sonko) and colleagues for refreshment at the Hippo Point on the shores of Lake Victoria.
At 7 pm, Sonko, in whose house Eddy stayed while in college, instructed him to get back to the house and prepare supper for his friends.
Eddy prepared a meal and phoned back at 9 pm to notify.
Sonko, however, never picked the call but instead texted that he was on the way coming.
Hours elapsed but Sonko never seemed to show up.
Eddy had to call back several times but no one answered the phone.
At 3 AM he was called for an emergency at his place of work (Agha Khan Morgue).
It wasn’t strange as he had responded to a couple of emergencies before.
“They just briefed me; respond to an emergency right now at the hospital,” he said.
After 20 minutes, he arrived at Agha Khan where he saw policemen with a body wrapped in a body bag.
They helped him escort it to the preservation chamber.
Eddy unwrapped the body as was his routine only to find it was his friend Sonko who he had been talking to a few hours ago.
Up to date, he had never learned how and where his friend died amid claims he was murdered.
