Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu alias Baba Yao has opposed the ongoing demolition of buildings built on riparian land and instead said rivers should be moved.
Governor Waititu’s solution on buildings built on riparian land has elicited a lot of hilarious reactions on social media.
Speaking on Sunday at the Presbyterian Church (PCEA) in Gikambura, Kiambu, Waititu said that the ongoing demolition of buildings should stop.
According to Waititu, owners of structures built close to river beds should incur the costs of moving the rivers away from their structures.
“Kama watu wanasupport ubomoaji, mimi hapana support. Mambo iangaliwe kama kuna nyumba yako imekaribiana na mto, wewe uambiwe ni gharama yako kuhakikisha hiyo mto imesonga kidogo. Lakini kubomoa nyumba is not a solution. Honestly speaking. It’s such a big loss,” said Waititu.
The National Environmental Management Authority has been bringing down buildings built on river beds in Nairobi and those affected are Shell petrol station and Java House in Kileleshwa, Southend Mall on Lang’ata Road, Ukay and Oshwal centres in Westlands have also been demolished.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that the government will continue demolishing structures on riparian land adding that government officials who approved construction of such buildings will be arrested and prosecuted.
Here are reactions from Northeastern residents on social media following Waititu’s statement:
